Do You Hear That Dress?

SELECTION:
Sonic Fabric is an audible textile woven from recycled casette tapes.

REFLECTION:
Alyce Santoro had been inspired by the use of strands of tape as wind indicators on sail boats and Tibetan prayer flags since childhood. While training to become a Marine Biologist, Santoro began experimenting with this innovative medium and after much trial and error Sonic Fabric became a reality.

Sonic Fabric actually emits sound when a tape head is ran across its surface because the tape retains its magnetic quality through the weaving process, so it acts as a big wide band of audio tape.

If you want a piece of the pie, visit the Sonic Fabric online shop where you can purchase messenger bags, flags and swatches. Upon request clothing can also be made (like the custom Sonic Dress woven for Phish drummer Jon Fishman which he wore and played during a 2004 Las Vegas Phish concert).
