SELECTION:
Belgian artist Fred Eerdekens creates sculptures that manipulate light and shadows to reveal hidden messages.

REFLECTION:
Since Eerdekens began individually showing his work in 1984, it has only been seen in the United States a handful of times-in New York City and Santa Monica. His love of language, is made obvious by the messages he sprawls across gallery walls, but how he actually contructs these imaginative installations is a bit more unclear. The point then, of attending a Eerdekens exhibit is for you, the viewer, to interact with the his abstact fabrications in an attempt to understand the method behind his linguistic madness.
The two photographs above best capture the conceptual spirit of Fred Eerdekens work. Short Story is one of newer works that was recently shown at the Armory in New York. By twisting copper wire into seemingly random squiggles, a message is revealed when light is shined on it at a very specific angle. If you squint you can see that it reads, "A very short story with a lot of fiction in the middle." And in a 2002 exhibition in France, he used artificial trees and two light projectors, Eerdekens to magically display the phrase "mhmmmhm" on an opposing wall.
Hopefully Fred Eerdekens will visit the U.S. again soon...maybe this time he will even come Philadelphia.
